The Source

Our journey begins in the untouched, remote locations of New Zealand's North Island. Here, our bees forage on native Manuka flowers, creating honey that is as pure as the land it comes from.

Happy Bees, Better Honey

We practice sustainable beekeeping, ensuring our hives are healthy and strong. Instead of feeding our bees artificial sugar, we leave honey in the hives over winter, resulting in a superior, natural product.

From Our Family To Yours

Our Story

We purchased "Ngamaia Farms," the heart of our Beef & Bee operation, in 2002. After 19 years milking cows, we exited the dairy industry in 2014 and, with help from our apiarist neighbours, started our own Apiary.

Our deep connection to the people and the land has helped us to produce top-quality honey from the very start. We are stoked to be 100% New Zealand locally owned and operated, and we know you will enjoy our deliciously smooth honey as much as we have enjoyed creating it.

Our Philosophy

Our Honey

At Ngamaia Farms our sole focus is on producing top-quality honey. To achieve this we don't add sugar, and ensure we keep hive numbers per beekeeper low. In the autumn, instead of feeding our hives artificial sugar, we leave their own honey to nourish them through winter. After all, it is the food they make using their own recipe.

People

The most important. We couldn't produce our unique honey without our landowners who allow us access to their beautiful land/Whenua. We work together to find a partnership that works for everyone.

Places

Access is granted by our landowners, friends, and family and luckily for us this happens to be in some of the most breathtaking, remote places in New Zealand's North Island.

Precision

We keep hive numbers low so we can maintain them to the highest standard. We pride ourselves on strong Queen bees, which means strong hives you can count on to deliver quality honey.

How we create... Our honey = Your well being®

Preparing the Hives

Our beekeeping year starts in late winter, waking up the dormant hives by feeding uncapped honey and pollen. This triggers the Queen bee to start laying. As the bee numbers increase, the hive becomes stronger and ready to harvest the Northland Manuka nectar as spring arrives.

Harvesting

We remove the bees from the honey box using a bee escape. Overnight, the bees freely move down, leaving bee-free honey upstairs. The next morning the honey can be removed without stressing the bees or the beekeeper. The honey is then transported to our local extraction plant.

Travel

Once the Northland nectar is harvested, we pick up our strongest hives and travel to our Southern sites to hopefully make more honey. Our hives then return to their homes in the Northland bush to enjoy a well-earned rest!
